The lux level is a measure of the amount of light that falls on a surface. It is expressed in lux (lx) and is used to determine the level of illumination in a space. Here’s how to calculate lux level:
- Determine the area to be illuminated: Measure the length and width of the area to be illuminated, and multiply them to calculate the area in square meters (m²).
- Determine the required illumination level: The required illumination level depends on the function of the space. For example, a workspace may require higher illumination than a living room. The illumination level is measured in lux (lx). The recommended illumination levels for different spaces are specified in standards and codes such as the IESNA Lighting Handbook or local building codes.
- Calculate the total lumens required: Lumens are a measure of the total amount of light produced by a light source. To calculate the total lumens required, multiply the area of the space in square meters by the required illumination level in lux. This will give you the total lumens required to light the space.
Total Lumens = Area x Illumination Level
- Choose the appropriate light source: The light source should be chosen based on the required total lumens. The lumen output of light sources varies depending on the type and wattage of the bulb or fixture. Choose a light source that provides the required lumens while also considering factors such as energy efficiency and color temperature.
- Determine the number of fixtures required: The number of fixtures required depends on the lumen output of the chosen light source. Divide the total lumens required by the lumen output of the chosen light source to determine the number of fixtures required.
Number of Fixtures = Total Lumens Required / Lumen Output of Light Source
By following these steps, you can calculate the lux level required for a space and choose the appropriate lighting fixtures to meet that requirement.
